The Beavertail has endured it all. Fires, hurricanes, floods and storms galore, the legend of this lighthouse is long and enduring. Originally commissioned in 1750, it was only the 3rd lighthouse to be built in the United States. It is still standing today, both as a historical landmark and a still fully functional and critical piece of Rhode Island seafare.

Drawing its name from the beaver shaped island it resides on, the lighthouse controls critical access into both the east and west approaches to Newport. Due to the hard crashing surf, the Beavertail has had to try out more fog horns than any other, including one that was powered by a horse. Alerting for fog is one of its core functions still to this day, with RI having over 3400 shipwrecks.

This canvas print captures the iconic lighthouse, not from out at sea, but from the very rocky shores it’s designed to protect from. With time-lapsed waves and sharp rocks dominating the foreground, the lighthouse stands tall and strong against the deep blue skies of Conanicut Island in Jamestown, Rhode Island, warning all who approach of the dangers below.
